Fino alla metà dell’Ottocento, il Sudafrica era considerato soltanto un miscuglio conflittuale di colonie inglesi, repubbliche boere e regni africani, senza alcun valore per il resto del mondo. Ma nel 1871 le prospettive cambiarono radicalmente: una serie di indagini minerarie portò alla scoperta di uno dei più grandi giacimenti di diamanti dell’intero pianeta, cui seguì, quindici anni dopo, la notizia della presenza sul territorio di ricchissime miniere d’oro.
